New Shed Rules RELEASED

New Shed Rules RELEASED

Under 10m² → ✅ Can be built right up against the fence
That includes the shed in the picture!
10–30m² → ✅ Can be built 1 metre from the boundary
No building consent required
That’s it. More shed, less red tape.
---
We released some info early last year, before these rules were finalized, you can read up on them here.
👉 **[New shed boundary rules – what you want to know](https://goodwood.nz/blogs/news/new-shed-boundary-rules-what-youyone planning a shed.
---
What’s Changed?
Until now, sheds between **10m² and 30m²** had to sit away from the boundary by the **same distance as their height**. A 2.4m‑high shed needed to be 2.4m off the fence — which on most sections meant plonking it right in the middle of the yard.

Under the new rules (rolling out by the **end of 2025**):

- **Small sheds (under 10m²)** can go **right next to the boundary**
- **Medium sheds (10–30m²)** only need **1 metre clearance**
- No building consent required for either

Simple. Sensible. Long overdue.
Why This Matters
Sections are getting smaller. Storage needs aren’t.

These changes mean you can:
- Use fence lines properly
- Keep sheds out of the middle of the lawn
- Build faster and cheaper
- Avoid unnecessary consenting delays

For a lot of people, this was the one rule stopping them from getting a shed at all.
---
A Quick Reality Check
Even though consent rules are easing, a few things still apply:

- Must be **single-storey and detached**
- Must comply with the **NZ Building Code**
- **No plumbing, kitchens, or bathrooms**
- Local **district plan rules still apply**

Easier doesn’t mean careless — just more practical.
---
Why This Works So Well With a Goodwood Shed
Our sheds are:
- Sized to suit consent‑exempt builds
- Designed for real NZ sections
- Easy to place, easy to assemble, and built to last

With the boundary rules relaxing, it’s now easier than ever to put a shed exactly where it makes sense — tight to the fence, tucked down the side, or in spaces that were previously off‑limits.
---
The Bottom Line

If boundary rules were the thing holding you back, they’re about to stop being a problem.
